1891. Famed British detective Sherlock Holmes is a cocaine addict, speculation being that he started his regular injections of a seven per-cent solution of the drug to relieve the boredom between cases. He has been publicly persecuting who he considers his arch nemesis, aged Mathematics Professor James Moriarty. Holmes' loyal associate, Dr. John Watson, who only knows Moriarty by name through Holmes' rants against him, believes the addiction to cocaine is fueling Holmes' persecution, especially after he finally meets Moriarty, who he believes to be a decent person. Knowing that Holmes would not go willingly, Watson and Holmes' brother, Mycroft Holmes, with Moriarty's assistance, enact a plan to get Holmes to Vienna to be under the care of Dr. Sigmund Freud, who is reported to be able to cure patients of cocaine addiction partly through the use of hypnosis. The plan to get Holmes to Freud in Vienna works, Holmes who is initially a reluctant patient. Through the treatment, which includes Holmes going through painful withdrawal, Holmes is initially also reluctant to get involved in a case of another of Freud's former cocaine-addled patients, singer Lola Devereaux, who was found by the river seemingly in an effort to commit suicide. There is only a case in which Holmes can get involved as he surmises, based on evidence, that Devereaux's attempted suicide and her being back on cocaine is solely the result of she having been abducted and held captive, her captivity from which she was able to escape. Holmes, Watson and Freud, who has his own powers of investigative deduction, work on the case together, knowing that they have to discover who abducted her and why, her abductor who may try it again.—Huggo

He also finds himself at odds with the Americans because of the Hearst media empire's press campaign against him. To counter both of these, he sends emissaries to movie producers to convince them to pay to film his progress and the actual battles. Producer D.W. Griffith (Colm Feore) becomes interested and sends Frank Thayer (Eion Bailey) with a film crew to develop film reels. Thayer becomes horrified and fascinated by the bandit. He finds an enigmatic individual that is both ghoulishly brutal and charmingly captivating. The resulting film became the first feature length movie, introducing scores of Americans to the true horrors of war that they had never personally seen. Thayer sold the studios on making the film despite their concerns that no one would sit through a movie longer than 1 hour by convincing them that they could raise the price of movies to ten cents, doubling the going price at that time.

Three separate stories of love, desire and/or obsession are presented. "The Hand" tells of the desire that builds in the several years long largely professional relationship (his profession) between Xiao Zhang, the apprentice to tailor Mr. Jin, and Ms. Hua, a prostitute, the two who meet when he is first sent to take her measurements for a new dress. Sexually inexperienced, that meeting awakens Zhang's sexual desires. The story takes place during a phase of Ms. Hua's life when she becomes ill, making her unable to work and thus live to the style to which she is accustomed. In "Equilibrium", Nick Penrose is having his first session with Dr. Pearl, a therapist, Nick's anxiety and thus want to see a therapist probably due to a combination of starting a new project with his colleague Hal in their job as advertising executives, and a recurring dream he is having about a woman who he doesn't know but knows in the dream, that woman who is not his wife, Cecelia. These issues may be at play but not quite in the way he expects as shown after this therapy session. And in "The Dangerous Thread of Things", Christopher and Cloe are probably coming to the end of their relationship. They still seem to love each other but don't seem to be able to be with each other in always arguing. Their relationship is affected by each individually encountering Linda, the girl who lives in the tower across the way from their house. —Huggo

Jakob, however, has a real secret in that he is hiding a young Jewish girl who escaped from a camp transport train. In the Cold War, when the captain of a Russian submarine comes too close to the Gloucester Island in Massachusetts to give a look at America, the submarine gets stranded.
